Montecristo Cigars

Montecristo cigars is one of the  most famous of the many famous Havana brands started in 1935. In July 1935, Alonso Menedez purchased the firm of Particulares S.A., which made the well-known Particulares brand as well as the Byron brand. In the same month, a new brand - Montecristo- was started.

The name is reported to have been inspired by Alexandre Dumas's 1844 novel, Le Comte of Monte Cristo. With a strong marketing effort from Alfred Dunhill of London, this brand became the most popular of all Havana exports. In fact, it was because of the sales of Montecristo that Menendez, Garcia y Cia. was able to purchase the H. Upmann brands from J. Frankau S.A. in 1937 and manufacture of Montecristo was then moved to the H. Upmann factory.

There are no machine-made shapes in this range and the strength is medium to full: in fact, it has become the standard by which all other Havanas arer now judged. Perelman's Pocket Cyclopedia of Havana CigarsThrid Edition
