Romeo Y Julieta Cigars

Registered in1873 by Inocencio Alvarez and Mannin Garcia, Romeo y Julieta cigars immediately showed its quality by winning gold medals at four international expositions. But it really took off after its acquisition in1903 by Jose Rodriguez Fernandez, known as "Pepin." Named for the lovers made famous in William Shakespeare's tradgedy of the same name, the brand also is traditionally credited with the introduction of the "Churchill" shape in honour of the British statesman Winston Churchill. This Romeo y Julieta size was originally developed in the 1910s in honour of the French prime minister Georges "The Tiger" Clemenceau and called "Clemenceau"; it was prodused until the late 1980s. The size was reportedly Winston Churchill's favourite, leading to the naming of a new cigar of the same size for him after his visit to the factory in1946.

Fernandez promoted Romeo y Julieta cigars with endless energy and at one time, his Rodriguez, Arguelles y Cia. factory produced upwards of 2000 different cigar bands, personalised for their very best customers. Fernandez died at 88 in 1954, but his efforts survive him as his medium-flavoured Romeo y Julieta brand is one of the most widely known and appreciated in the world today.
