H Upmann cigars "As famous a brand as there is in the world of cigars., the H.Upmann cigar  brand dates back to 1844. There is considerable confusion amoung historians whether the brand was named after Hermann Upmann, or stood for Hermanos (brothers) Upmann for August and Hermann, or whether it was a play on the family name which might have been "H Upmann".
