Duke of Connaught, Prince Albert
1850-1942

Prince Albert, seventh child and third (and by all accounts favourite) son of Queen Victoria, took the title Duke of Connaught in 1874. Five years later, at the age of 29, he married the shy Princess Louise, daughter of Prince Frederick of Prussia, in 1879.

Prince Albert led very much the military life; after completing his education at the Royal Military College, Woolwich, he served in South Africa, Egypt, India, Ireland and Canada, reaching the rank of Field Marshal in 1902. With his own German heritage, as well as that of his wife, he unsurprisingly took a great interest in German affairs. Indeed, it could be for this reason that he was posted to Canada as Governor General in 1911, as relations between England and Germany became strained. On completing his term as Governor, he did return to England for the remainder of the war.

After his brother, the Prince of Wales, acceded to the throne in 1901, the Duke took over his role as freemason Grandmaster - a position he held until his death in 1942.
