Baron Charles Russell (of Killowen)
1832-1900
A famed barrister, Charles Russell was appointed as a queen's councel in 1872. He served as attorney general under Gladstone until being made Lord Chief Justice in 1894, a position he held until his death.
Unfortunately for another of our more celebrated clients, Russell led the prosecution in the trial of Oscar Wilde, leading to his imprisonment.
Notably involved in the resolution of the Venezuala-British Guyana border
dispute of 1899 which had threatened an Anglo-American war, the even-handed
judgements for which he was well-known were quite possibly inspired by the
wafting smoke of his favourite Havana.
