Lord Westbury
1800-1873

Lord Westbury, heir of Baron Richard Bethel Westbury (1800-1873), the English judge, who was born in Bradford-on-Avon. Called to the bar in 1823, he became Solicitor-General in 1852, Attorney-General in 1856, and in 1861, Lord Chancellor. Baron Westbury promoted measures of law reforms, and persuaded the Inns of Court to improve the training of barristers, but failed to carry his schemes for codifying the statues and for combining law and equity. We regret to say that he was an unpopular judge, noted for his sarcastic wit.
